The Three Graces design derives from the 1817 pattern coin produced by William Wyon and Benedetto Pistrucci for the proposed coinage of George III — a piece so admired it never entered circulation, yet never quite disappeared from the British numismatic imagination. Alderney, a Crown dependency outside the United Kingdom proper, has no obligation to mirror Royal Mint output and regularly licenses designs the Mint itself has retired or reconceived.
The 1817 original sold at auction in 2022 for over £180,000.
