Alderney has issued commemorative gold under Crown Dependency authority since the 1990s, with The Royal Mint and various private mints producing pieces marketed primarily to collectors rather than for any practical monetary function. The Platinum Jubilee series marking Elizabeth II's 70-year reign generated a considerable volume of issues across multiple denominations and metals — this 31.1g fine gold piece being among the heavier and more expensive entries.
Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022, making jubilee issues struck that same year inadvertently posthumous commemoratives for much of their retail life.
