Additional information

The Griffin of Edward III is the fourth release in the Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series, drawn from the heraldic supporters flanking the shield at Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation. Edward III adopted the gold griffin as a personal badge in the fourteenth century, distinct from the royal arms proper — its appearance at the coronation was a deliberate antiquarian gesture reaching back six hundred years.

The series concluded with a Completer coin in 2021, the same year this proof was struck.
