The University of Glasgow series was issued to mark the 550th anniversary of the university's founding in 1451, making this one of the few British commercial banknotes explicitly tied to an institutional jubilee rather than a routine series update. Clydesdale Bank has long exercised its right as a Scottish note-issuing bank under the Banking Acts, but commemorative high-denomination notes of this type were rarely put into general circulation — most were purchased directly by collectors at face value through the bank's own channels.
The £100 face value made casual spending essentially nonexistent. These left circulation before they entered it.
