Obverse description A classical allegorical figure of Hibernia stands at right in intaglio, draped in robes and resting on a plinth bearing the motto 'BONA FIDES REIPUBLICA STABILITAS'. A vignette of a bust, likely a second classical figure, appears at left centre, set against an intricate guilloche underprint in red and pink tones throughout. The issuer's address 'BELFAST, DONEGALL PLACE' is inscribed at lower left, with the denomination rendered in large letterpress text at centre.

Reverse description The Bank of Ireland building occupies the central vignette, flanked by vignettes representing industrial and commercial prosperity: an aeroplane and textile rolls at left, and thread rolls alongside the SS Canberra at right. The overall design is rendered in a uniform red-pink colour scheme with fine guilloche patterning throughout.
