The Bank of Sudan's 100 Pound note of 1991–92 arrived during one of the most turbulent periods in Sudanese monetary history. The National Islamic Front had consolidated power following the 1989 coup, and the government was simultaneously managing severe inflation, international sanctions pressure, and the ongoing civil war in the south — conditions that made high-denomination notes necessary far sooner than would otherwise have been expected.
Thomas De La Rue retained the printing contract through this period, an arrangement that would end when Sudan eventually moved toward domestic currency production. The single watermark security feature reflects the relatively modest specifications ordered for this issue.
