Part of the long-running Mexican states series launched in 2003, this issue commemorates Tlaxcala — the smallest state in Mexico and the one whose indigenous forces allied with Hernán Cortés against the Aztec Triple Alliance in 1519. That alliance remains politically charged in Mexican historiography; Tlaxcaltec leaders calculated that Spanish partnership offered liberation from Aztec tribute demands they had resisted for generations. Whether that calculation was vindication or betrayal is still debated.
The series ran through all 31 states plus the Federal District, with the Casa de Moneda issuing collector and circulation versions across nearly a decade.
