The piedfort format — a coin struck on a blank roughly twice the standard thickness — has no circulation function whatsoever. Cuba's use of it here places this squarely in the collector export market that the Castro government aggressively cultivated through the 1980s to generate hard currency, a revenue stream that became increasingly critical as Soviet subsidies grew uncertain in the lead-up to the Special Period. Piedfort issues were sold almost exclusively to foreign buyers; virtually none remained on the island.
At 62.2g of .999 gold, this is essentially a double-weight bullion piece dressed in commemorative clothing. The JMA reference prefix "AAEE" aligns it with a specific cataloguing sequence used for Cuban piedfort and proof issues of this decade.
