Argentina's 1978 World Cup was awarded by FIFA in 1966, but by the time the tournament arrived the host nation was under military junta rule following the 1976 coup. The regime invested heavily in the event as an instrument of international legitimacy, and the commemorative coinage program was part of that calculated projection. Two date varieties exist — 1977 and 1978 — reflecting production across both years leading into the June tournament.
The junta's propaganda apparatus ran parallel to the minting operation. Detention centers operated within miles of Buenos Aires stadiums during match days.
