Reverse description Nine Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in various attitudes of flight and rest are arranged in a loose circular composition across the field, each rendered with precise, naturalistic wing venation. The denomination $100 appears in large bold numerals to the right, with the date 1987 inscribed above it. The italic inscription mariposa monarca is placed in the center-left field. The Mexico City mint mark Mo appears below and to the right of the denomination. The design is struck to proof standard with a highly polished background contrasting the finely detailed butterfly motifs.
