Obverse description The obverse features the Mexican national coat of arms in the bimetallic centre, depicting a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a serpent, rendered in high-relief proof finish against a polished field. The eagle is framed by an oak and laurel wreath at the base. The national legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs around the upper periphery within the silver outer ring, struck in mirror-like proof quality. Decorative foliate scrollwork flanks the lower portion of the inner disc, enhancing the heraldic composition.

Additional information

Part of Banco de México's long-running series honoring the pre-Columbian cultures of each Mexican state, this issue represents Nayarit — a Pacific coast state whose ancient Shaft Tomb culture, active roughly 300 BCE to 400 CE, produced some of the most distinctive ceramic and gold work in Mesoamerica. The bimetallic proof format, introduced for this series in the early 2000s, required the Mexican Mint to develop specialized die and planchet handling to prevent contamination between the two metals during striking.
