Thomas De La Rue held the contract for Uruguay's BROU peso series across multiple decades, and this 100 Peso note — though dated to 1948 issue — draws its legal authority from the January 2nd, 1939 enabling legislation, a gap of nearly a decade that reflects how slowly Uruguay refreshed its higher denomination stock during that period. The law-date convention was common in Latin American issues but occasionally creates confusion when dating specimens or distinguishing issue varieties within Pick 39.
Watermark security was the principal anti-counterfeiting measure, which by the late 1940s was already considered minimal for a note of this value.
