This issue belongs to Cuba's long-running series commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, a program that generated dozens of gold and silver pieces throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. Philip II, who ruled Castile and the Low Countries simultaneously following his father Charles V's abdication in 1556, presided over the peak of Spanish colonial extraction from the Americas — the very system that made Cuban gold a geopolitical instrument for nearly three centuries.
The series was produced for the collector and bullion export market, not domestic circulation, as Cuba's peso had long been structurally disconnected from any gold standard.
