Additional information

The Bee Hummingbird (*Mellisuga helenae*) is endemic to Cuba and holds the distinction of being the smallest living bird species on earth, a fact that made it a recurring subject for Cuban commemorative issues in the 1990s. This 1999 piece belongs to a broader wildlife series the Banco Nacional de Cuba produced targeting the collector market during the Special Period — the severe economic contraction following the Soviet collapse that effectively ended Cuba's domestic hard-currency circulation.

Mintages for this series were kept deliberately low, with distribution routed almost entirely through foreign dealers and auction houses rather than domestic channels.
