Issued as part of Mexico's "Estados de la República" series, which ran from 2003 to 2009 and ultimately produced circulation-quality bimetallic coins for all 31 states plus the Federal District. Each state received a single commemorative issue; Baja California Sur, admitted to the federation only in 1974 as Mexico's most recently incorporated state, was among the later releases in the program.
The .925 silver centres were struck separately before insertion into the aluminium bronze rings — a process that generated occasional misalignment errors now documented across multiple states in the series.
