Issued by the Macao Monetary Authority as part of the territory's long-running lunar series, the 2009 Ox issue appeared roughly a decade after the 1999 handover from Portugal to China, by which point AMCM — the Autoridade Monetária de Macau — had firmly established the pataca's independence from the Hong Kong dollar peg debates that periodically resurface in the territory's monetary policy discussions. At 155.52 grams of .999 silver, these large-format pieces were produced primarily for the collector market and saw no meaningful circulation.
