Obverse description A Macau Banco Nacional Ultramarino 100 Patacas note counterstamped in 1945 with a typeset overprint reading 'PAGAVEL EM TIMOR' applied in dark ink across the upper portion of the face, validating the note for circulation in Portuguese Timor. The underlying note displays an elaborate guilloche underprint in red and ochre tones, with the central oval vignette bearing the denomination '$100' within a fine lathe-work border, flanked by the issuer's name 'BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO' in a curved banner. Chinese characters expressing the denomination '壹佰圓' appear at upper and lower corners, and the Portuguese Republican arms vignette inscribed 'REPUBLICA 5 DE OUTUBRO DE 1910' is repeated at the lateral medallions.

Comments

This note began life as a 100 Patacas issue for Macau before being overprinted "PAGAVEL EM TIMOR" — payable in Timor — and redeployed for Portuguese Timor. The practice of adapting existing Macau stock for Timorese circulation reflects the complete collapse of normal supply chains to Portuguese Timor during the Japanese occupation, which had only just ended when this note was prepared in 1945.

Barclay & Fry handled the base print in London, but the overprint itself warrants scrutiny — placement and ink consistency vary across known examples, suggesting a rushed application rather than a controlled second-pass printing.
