Issued to mark the final years of operation at Macau's Kai Ho airport before the handover-era infrastructure push, this coin predates the massive land reclamation project that would eventually host the new international airport on Taipa Island — itself a feat of engineering completed under Portuguese administration in 1995, the same year of issue. The airport had been a point of persistent tension between Lisbon and Beijing during the late colonial period, with the PRC initially opposing its construction before ultimately acquiescing.
