Macau's lunar series issues of this scale are struck by the Imprensa Nacional — Casa da Moeda of Portugal under contract, a colonial-era printing relationship that survived the 1999 handover to China and continues to supply Macau's numismatic program. The Rooster year pieces from 2017 were produced in strictly limited quantities targeting the Southeast Asian collector market, where lunar series silver remains heavily absorbed by private hoards rather than resale channels.
The 5-troy-ounce format places this squarely in a collector tier introduced by Macau in the 1990s to compete directly with Hong Kong's own lunar issues following the drawdown of Portuguese administrative authority.
