Obverse description Central vignette presents an intaglio portrait of José Gervasio Artigas (1764–1850), national hero and founding father of Uruguayan independence, positioned at right of center against a fine guilloche underprint. The Uruguayan National Coat of Arms appears to the left, with the denomination and issuing authority inscriptions arranged across the note in letterpress. The name ARTIGAS is printed beneath the portrait as an identifying legend.

The Nuevos Peso series was introduced in 1975 after Uruguay replaced the original Peso at a rate of 1,000 to 1, itself a response to the severe inflation that had plagued the country through the 1960s and early 1970s. By 1987, when this note was issued, inflation had returned with force — annual rates were running above 60% — meaning a 100 Nuevos Pesos denomination was already losing practical purchasing power rapidly. The entire Nuevos Peso system would itself be replaced in 1993, again at 1,000 to 1, when the Peso Uruguayo was reintroduced.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement as printer was long-standing for Uruguayan issues of this period.
