Bhutan's lunar series issues are produced under contract by foreign mints — the Royal Monetary Authority has no domestic minting facility — and are sold exclusively as collector pieces, never entering circulation. The Year of the Boar falls twelfth in the twelve-year Tibetan-Buddhist lunar cycle, making 2019 issues the close of one full rotation before the cycle resets with the Rat in 2020.
