Additional information

Finland hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989, a city that had been a center of Finnish cross-country skiing since the 1920s. The Bank of Finland's commemorative program in this period leaned heavily on sporting events, and the 1989 Lahti games gave the series a domestically resonant subject — Finland had won the championships there before and would again.

The .830 silver fineness is characteristic of Finnish commemoratives of this generation, a deliberate step below sterling that kept production costs manageable without dropping to the lower alloys used in some contemporary European issues.
