Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing effigy of Pope Paul VI (born Giovanni Battista Montini, 1897–1978), shown in papal vestments including the mozzetta. The encircling legend reads his name in Latin, his title of Pontifex Maximus, and the regnal year of his pontificate in Roman numerals. The portrait is rendered in a restrained, modern sculptural style characteristic of mid-twentieth-century Vatican coinage.
