The date range on this note maps almost exactly onto the Italian armistice and the subsequent German occupation of Rome. Azzolini — Vincenzo Azzolini, Governor of the Banca d'Italia — was arrested by the Allies in 1945 on charges of collaborating with the Nazi looting of the bank's gold reserves, a transfer he oversaw to northern Italy and then Germany in 1943–44. His signature appearing on notes dated through late 1944 reflects how long the occupied administration continued issuing currency under his authority.
The transition to Introna's signature in December 1944 marks the reorganization of the bank's leadership following liberation. Signature combinations are the primary distinction between varieties within this pick number.
