Campo 91 at Avezzano was one of several Italian prisoner of war camps that issued internal scrip to control commerce among inmates — keeping real currency out of prisoner hands was as much a security measure as an economic one. These camp lire circulated only within the wire, redeemable at the camp canteen and nowhere else.
The signature of Tenente Colonnello Pietro Tirone as camp commandant gives this note a precise point of administrative accountability rare in POW scrip, which was often issued without named authority. Tirone's signature across the series is the primary authentication marker collectors rely on today.
