Reverse description Three caravels under full sail are depicted in dynamic composition across the central field, their rigging and sails rendered in fine relief, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage to the Americas. Sargasso seaweed winds through the lower portion of the design, entwining with the large denomination numeral 100 positioned at the base. The commemorative dates 1492 and 1992 appear at the upper left and upper right respectively, flanking the masts of the ships. The Rome Mint mark R is situated at the lower center, just above the denomination. The overall composition is dynamic and artistically accomplished, filling the field with a sense of maritime movement.

Additional information

San Marino issued a series of annual themed coinage throughout the 1980s and 1990s, each year's set tied to a specific subject — 1992 being designated around the discovery of America quincentennial. The republic's mint output was modest by design, with annual sets primarily absorbed by collectors rather than circulation, leaving most survivors in original condition.
