| Additional information |
San Marino's 1979 coinage program was part of the republic's annual commemorative series issued under a formal agreement with Italy, which has guaranteed San Marino the right to mint its own lire-denominated coins since a 1897 convention, later renegotiated through the 20th century. Each year's series carried a distinct theme; 1979 was dedicated to the International Year of the Child, a UN designation that shaped the entire set's imagery.
Despite legal tender status, these coins rarely saw genuine circulation — Italian shopkeepers were under no practical obligation to accept them, and most pieces were absorbed immediately by collectors.
