The Banque du Liban shifted this denomination to copper-plated steel from its earlier nickel-clad steel composition during a period when Lebanon was still absorbing the economic aftershocks of the 2005 Hariri assassination and the political crisis that followed. The reformulation was a quiet cost-cutting measure — the lira had lost so much purchasing power since the civil war era that 100 pounds barely registered in daily commerce.
