The Phrygians series was part of Turkey's broader "Anatolian Civilizations" bullion and collector program, which the Turkish State Mint launched to highlight pre-Ottoman cultures that flourished on what is now Turkish soil. Phrygia, centered on the Sakarya River basin, is best known numismatically for its own ancient coinage tradition — making the choice to commemorate it on a modern gold issue carry some historical irony.
At 1.5 grams of 22-karat gold, these were produced in limited runs with collector appeal rather than circulation in mind. KM# 1317 is one of several denomination variants within the series issued that year.
