The liburna is a local complementary currency introduced by Zadar's tourist board — not legal tender, but accepted by participating merchants in the city as a way to stimulate spending within the local economy during the tourist season. These schemes have proliferated across Croatian coastal towns, each minting their own scrip tied to regional identity rather than any banking authority.
Jakuš handling both design and engraving is worth noting. That degree of single-author control over a piece of printed scrip is unusual and gives the note a coherence rarely seen in municipally commissioned work.
