Elijah (Iliya in Bulgarian tradition) is among the most venerated figures in the Bulgarian Orthodox calendar, with his feast on July 20th historically marking the end of summer fieldwork and the beginning of harvest preparations across rural Bulgaria. The Bulgarian National Bank has issued a series of gold commemoratives tied to Orthodox saints, and this piece falls within that program — one of several issued through the 2010s pairing fine gold with the liturgical calendar. KM#331 places it firmly in the modern commemorative series rather than any circulating issue.
