| Reverse description | A large Latin cross dominates the central field, flanking which are two facing bust portraits in high relief: to the left, Pope John Paul II vested in papal robes and mitre, his right hand raised in benediction and his left holding a pastoral staff, labelled PAPA IOAN PAUL II; to the right, Patriarch Teoctist of Romania in hierarchical vestments and crown, holding a patriarchal staff, labelled PATRIARHUL TEOCTIST. Below each portrait appear their respective heraldic arms — the papal tiara and crossed keys to the left and the Romanian Patriarchate coat of arms to the right — flanked by decorative cross ornaments. The circular legend VIZITA S.S. PAPA IOAN PAUL II IN ROMANIA arcs around the upper rim, and the dates 7-9 MAI 1999 appear along the lower field. |

| Additional information |
John Paul II's May 1999 visit to Romania was the first papal visit to a predominantly Orthodox country since the Great Schism of 1054 — a fact the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate negotiated carefully before granting its blessing. The visit carried extraordinary diplomatic weight, occurring just weeks after NATO began bombing neighboring Yugoslavia.
This aluminium pattern was never approved for circulation issue. The Stamb P-496 designation confirms its trial piece status, struck to test the design before the commemorative program was finalized in a different format.
