John Paul II's May 1999 visit to Romania was the first papal visit to a predominantly Orthodox country since the Great Schism of 1054 — a fact the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate negotiated carefully before granting its blessing. The visit carried extraordinary diplomatic weight, occurring just weeks after NATO began bombing neighboring Yugoslavia.
This aluminium pattern was never approved for circulation issue. The Stamb P-496 designation confirms its trial piece status, struck to test the design before the commemorative program was finalized in a different format.
