Ştefan cel Mare — Stephen the Great — ruled Moldavia for 47 years and repelled Ottoman, Polish, and Hungarian incursions with a consistency that made him an anomaly among 15th-century European princes. Pope Sixtus IV reportedly called him "Athlete of Christ" following his victory at Vaslui in 1475, though historians debate whether the title was formally conferred or merely diplomatic correspondence. The 2004 issue coincided with the 500th anniversary of his death, making it one of several commemorative programs Moldova produced that year to anchor a national identity that had been legally non-existent before 1991.
