Additional information

Mircea Eliade spent much of his productive intellectual life in exile — first in Paris, then Chicago — after refusing to return to Communist Romania following World War II. The Romanian state that had effectively driven him out would not rehabilitate his reputation until after 1989, making a commemorative gold issue in his honor a distinctly post-communist gesture of reclamation. His connections to the Iron Guard in the 1930s remain a subject of genuine scholarly dispute that the coin's issuance quietly sidesteps.
