| Obverse description | Central field features the coat of arms of the Republic of Moldova, depicting a displayed eagle bearing a shield charged with the traditional Moldovan symbols — an aurochs head with a star between its horns, accompanied by a rose and a crescent. The denomination '100 LEI' is inscribed in large characters below the coat of arms. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA · MOLDOVA' runs along the periphery, divided left and right by two small diamond-shaped ornaments, with the date '2000' positioned at the top of the field above the coat of arms. |

Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Eminescu's birth, this coin commemorates Romania and Moldova's shared claim to the poet — a claim that sits at the center of a long-running dispute over Moldovan national identity, in which Bucharest and Chișinău have periodically contested whether Moldovans constitute a distinct people or a branch of the Romanian nation. The National Bank of Moldova's decision to feature Eminescu was itself a cultural and political statement in that debate.
