Additional information

Iancu de Hunedoara — János Hunyadi in Hungarian sources — was regent of Hungary from 1446 to 1453 and the principal military organizer of Christian resistance against Ottoman expansion in the Balkans. His 1456 victory at Belgrade halted the Ottoman advance into central Europe for roughly seven decades. Romania has long claimed him as a national hero despite the contested ethnicity question that still surfaces in Romanian-Hungarian historiography.

This is a modern commemorative issue from the National Bank's ongoing series honoring medieval Romanian historical figures, struck in limited quantities for collectors rather than circulation.
