Alexandru cel Bun ruled Moldavia from 1400 to 1432, the longest reign of any medieval Moldavian prince, during which he successfully navigated pressure from both Poland and the Ottoman sultanate while maintaining formal vassal ties to Poland after 1387. This coin was issued to mark the 600th anniversary of his accession.
The National Bank of Moldova launched its commemorative silver program in the late 1990s partly to assert a distinct Moldovan national identity separate from Romanian historical narratives — a politically charged distinction in post-Soviet Chișinău.
