Additional information

Alecu Russo was a 19th-century Moldovan writer and intellectual whose 1840 trial and exile to a monastery in Soveja — ordered by Mihail Sturdza's Iași government — came directly after authorities discovered his involvement in organizing student protests. He is perhaps best remembered for inadvertently preserving the manuscript of Mioriţa, the foundational Romanian pastoral ballad, which he discovered and passed to Vasile Alecsandri for publication.

The Banca Națională a României had long issued commemorative gold in this weight class; Moldova's parallel program reflects a distinct numismatic identity that Chișinău has pursued deliberately since the early 2000s.
