Romania was among the first European countries to commit fully to polymer banknotes for its entire circulating series, a decision made partly in response to the chronic counterfeiting problems that plagued the paper issues of the 1990s hyperinflation period. The 100 Lei denomination was introduced following the 2005 redenomination, which lopped four zeros off the old leu — the old 1,000,000 Lei note effectively became this note.
De La Rue printed the polymer substrate series, and the 100 Lei anchored the upper-middle range of a remarkably stable post-redenomination system. Unusually long production run for a transitional-era note.
