Angola's 1999 redenomination replaced the readjustado kwanza at a rate of one million to one — a ratio that tells you everything about the hyperinflation the country had lived through during the civil war years. This 100 kwanza note entered circulation while that war was still ongoing; the Luanda government and UNITA forces wouldn't reach a final ceasefire until 2002.
Oberthur's production run for this series was notably long, with the note remaining in active issue through 2011 despite significant economic changes in the intervening decade. The watermark is the sole security feature — modest by contemporary standards for a denomination of this size.
