Issued to mark the 1700th anniversary of Diocletian's Palace in Split — the fortified retirement complex built by the emperor beginning around 295 AD that an entire medieval city grew up inside of, its towers converted to bell towers and its mausoleum into a cathedral. Croatia had declared independence only four years before this coin was struck, and the newly established central bank was using commemorative silver issues partly to assert institutional credibility on the international numismatic market.
