Additional information

Norway issued a series of commemorative 100 Kroner pieces ahead of the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, and this cross-country skiing piece is one of them. Lillehammer was awarded the Games in 1988, beating out Östersund and Anchorage, and Norway's decision to lean heavily into Nordic disciplines for its commemorative program was deliberate — cross-country skiing is effectively a national sport, with mass participation events like the Birkebeinerrennet drawing tens of thousands of amateur skiers annually.

The Birkebeiner race itself commemorates a 1206 episode in which Norwegian warriors skied an infant prince to safety during a civil war. That history runs deep enough to have shaped how Norway positioned its Olympic identity in 1994.
