| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing effigy of Queen Margrethe II wearing a tiara and pearl necklace, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The portrait is the fourth official effigy of the Queen, designed in a refined, contemporary style. The circular legend MARGRETHE II • DANMARKS DRONNING arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 2008 appears in the lower exergue. The entire design is framed by a broad, frosted border typical of Danish proof coinage. |

Issued to mark the International Polar Year 2007–2008, a coordinated global research initiative involving over 60 nations and roughly 50,000 scientists studying Arctic and Antarctic systems. Denmark's participation carried particular political weight given its ongoing sovereignty claims over Greenland and the continental shelf beneath the Arctic Ocean — claims that were actively being prepared for submission to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf around this same period.
The 4th portrait of Margrethe II, by sculptor Karin Lorentzen, was introduced in 2003.
