Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani — better known simply as Store Norske — operated the coal mines at Longyearbyen under a concession arrangement that gave it near-total administrative control over the settlement. The company issued its own scrip currency for use exclusively within that closed economy, where Norwegian krone had limited practical utility and the company controlled the only store, housing, and services available to miners. This was not an unusual arrangement for isolated industrial camps of the period, but the Arctic geography made it more absolute than most.
The 1946–1956 dating span reflects reuse of the same printed stock across a decade, with issue dates applied individually. The reverse variety (SN54r) is the scarcer of the two catalogue references.
