Pick 54 belongs to the eighth series of Norwegian banknotes, introduced from 2017 onward — though the design competition behind it, won by Metric Design and Snøhetta, generated considerable public debate about whether abstraction was an appropriate direction for national currency. The reverse pixelated "speed" concept in particular divided opinion. Norway had not redesigned its full note series since 1994, making this the first complete overhaul in over two decades.
Cotton substrate with a relatively modest security specification for a high-denomination note of its period — no color-shifting ink, no holographic stripe.
