The 1910 100 Kronen was the last major note series issued by the Austro-Hungarian Bank before the First World War dismantled the empire that backed it. Koloman Moser — better known as a founding figure of the Vienna Secession and a principal designer at the Wiener Werkstätte — produced the design, making this one of the rare instances where a note of this period was handled by an artist of genuine international standing rather than an in-house bank draughtsman.
Ferdinand Schirnböck's engraving work for the Austrian State Printing Office was technically exceptional, and this note is widely considered among the finest examples of his output. After 1918, the same plates were overprinted or adapted for successor states — Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and Austria itself all issued versions of existing Austro-Hungarian stock while new currencies were being arranged.
