Issued to mark the twentieth anniversary of Gagarin's April 1961 flight, this coin appeared at a moment when Soviet-bloc commemoratives were a reliable tool of political alignment. Czechoslovakia had been minting silver anniversary issues with some regularity since the 1960s, and the Gagarin subject fit neatly into that program. The .500 fineness — half silver by weight, the rest base metal — was the standard alloy the Czechoslovak State Bank had settled on for its commemorative series by this period, keeping silver content low enough to manage bullion costs while maintaining the prestige association of a "silver" coin.
