Issued to mark the 350th anniversary of the crowning of the Levočská Madona as a miraculous image, this coin commemorates one of the most enduring pilgrimage sites in Central Europe. The wooden Gothic statue in the Basilica of St. James in Levoča has drawn pilgrims since the 14th century, and the formal coronation ceremony of 1653 — conducted under Archbishop Juraj Lippay — elevated its official status within the Catholic Church.
Levoča itself was a dominant trading hub of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, a history reflected in the exceptional craftsmanship still visible throughout the town's preserved architecture. Slovakia's post-independence commemorative program has leaned heavily on such regional religious and cultural touchstones.
