Additional information

Issued on Stalin's 70th birthday, December 21, 1949, this coin was a direct political commission from the Czechoslovak Communist Party following the February 1948 coup that brought the party to power. Placing a living foreign head of state — a Soviet one, no less — on Czechoslovak coinage was without precedent in the country's numismatic history.

Stalin died in March 1953. Coins bearing his image were quietly withdrawn from official promotion almost immediately after, though they remained legal tender.
