| Obverse description | Conjoined busts of Queen Elizabeth II, diademed and wearing a tiara, and Prince Philip, both facing right, rendered in high relief against a polished proof field. The Queen's effigy is positioned in the foreground, her hair swept back beneath an ornate crown, with the Duke of Edinburgh's bare-headed profile visible behind. Issued to mark Queen Elizabeth II's 1982 visit to Papua New Guinea, this was one of relatively few occasions the Bank of Papua New Guinea authorized a gold commemorative — the country had only gained independence in 1975, and the early kina series was still establishing its commemorative precedents. The .900 fineness matches the standard adopted for most Commonwealth gold issues of the period rather than the finer .9999 gold that would become more common in subsequent decades.
